Floris Jespers was a master of diverse artistic talents being a painter in oils and watercolours - not only on traditional surfaces but also favouring eglomisé - fresco painter, tapestry designer, sculptor and graphic designer.


He was born in Borgerhout in and was the son of the sculptor Emile and the brother of the sculptor and engraver Oscar. Floris undertook his artistic instruction under Franz Courtens in L'Académie d'Anvers and also L'Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts. He had also studied music and for fifteen years he played cello in the orchestras at the theatre and in music halls.


Initially he painted in an Impressionistic style and the influence of Rik Wouters is discernible, but then between and , he gravitated to geometric abstraction and cubism which in turn evolved into Flemish expressionism which he employed until This style of painting involved blending several artistic techniques and the artist is constantly striving to evolve and this latter period saw him produce large works depicting citizens in urban settings and rural subjects.

His preferred subject matter through his career included landscapes - particularly in a plein-air style - figures and interior scenes.
After , Jespers began to introduce a direction in his work which demonstrated the influence of the late Impressionist style of painting known as intimisme. This was espoused by artists such as Vuillard and Bonnard where bourgeois domestic interiors were used as the setting for scenes of informal intimacy.

It developed from Symbolism, portraying naturalistic peasant scenes in somewhat melancholic landscapes.

The second wave of this movement, which so influenced Jespers, had as its most famous proponents, Gustave and Léon de Smet and Frits van den Berghe. The naturalistic expressionism that Jespers utilised, the strongly stylised paintings that have a remarkable rhythm, make him one of the leading artists of the time in that mode.
