After Carmelo's mother cleared high school, she moved to New York and enrolled in a secretarial school; she completed the course and got a certificate there.

Despite working multiple and odd jobs to ensure his son has a great future, Mary's sacrifices finally paid off. With her son becoming a successful NBA star, life has been good for Mary after losing her husband.

On Mother's day, Carmelo honored his mother with a loving tribute that read:
